RANGOON - A MOVIE REVIEW

Rangoon, the latest offspring of the master craftsman Vishal Bhardwaj narrates the triangle love story in the backdrop of World War 2 in 1944. British atrocities at its peak and confusion about the differing paths shown by Gandhi and Bose were making the atmosphere enigmatic in India.  Director tried to make a sweeping attempt to depict romance, war and deceit; and to make a political statement about the role of INA in the freedom struggle. It is disappointing that 2hr 47mt running time was not sufficient to deal this complex and confusing grey area in history.
As always, it was expected to be a Kangana ranwat solo show. But by the exceptional performances by Shahid and Saif , it came out as a flabbergast  package and was well appreciated by the audience. kangana’s  action and song sequences did justice to the expectations of “Rail ki raani” and “Toofan ki betti” adjectives. The scenic beauty of the north east was well captured by Pankaj Kumar. The cameo by the Japanese soldier was amusing and touching. Hindi speaking British officer and the INA lady spy did make an impact in the forward course of the movie. INA’s anthem rendered in Bengali towards the climax by Shahid was one of the most beautiful moment in the movie.
Overall, one can give this movie a chance for the flamboyant cinematography, thrilling action sequences by Kangana, and patriotic moments from Shahid, above average songs and average story line and direction.
